How To Become the Covid-19 Pandemic Lock Down’s Most Unlikely Winner

The old adage is still true. There is a silver lining in even the darkest cloud. Covid-19 is one of mankind’s darkest clouds but with medical knowledge and help the pandemic is slowing down in many of the countries that followed the new rules. After months of lock downs, people are able to travel within their own country or most of it.

Canada is one of those happy countries and we are taking advantage of it to visit the highlights of our own country, to see the places we always wanted to see. In the past, something has always lured us to more exotic destinations but now is the time for all of us to visit the places millions of people from around the world have come to see, some more than once.

Canada is the second largest country in the world. It would take a long time to cover all the places we would like to see. Most people check the list of the most visited places and highlight the places they would like to visit. The town of Banff in Alberta is one of those and the most popular summer and winter destination in Canada.

Banff has been called one of the most beautiful places in the world since it was first discovered in 1883 and for over a century, in the midst of the peaks of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the Fairmont Banff Spring Hotel has resided.

During the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railways in the Canadian Rockies, several employees accidentally stumbled across number of mineral hot springs in 1883. General Manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway, William C. Van Horne recognized the great business opportunity the hot springs and a grand hotel would bring to CPR.

As a highly respected, successful general manager, his idea was promptly accepted. Van Horne wasted no time in commissioning designs for a “brilliant grand dame” to be one of the world’s most luxurious hotels in one of the most beautiful corners of the world.

For the location Van Horne chose a spot overlooking the convergence of the Bow and the Spray rivers. Architect Bruce Price was chosen to lead the design team. For inspiration, Price fallowed the Chateaus-Vesque style. The Banff Spring Hotel debuted in 1886. It rapidly became the number one of the three mountain resorts in North America, and in due time one of the most visited hotels worldwide.

Fairmont Banff Springs Accommodations

The hotel offers the highest standard world class resorts amenities. The 757 rooms and suites provide superb accommodations and attentive personalized services. From comfortable, cozy, quiet rooms, to spacious suites with spectacular views, or the Fairmont Gold accommodations, are all designed to please and comfort guests.

Once you check in the Banff Springs, you are pampered from head to toe, in and out of you room with the spa, the championship golf course and, for families visiting, the children’s program to keep the kids busy and you free for a game of golf.

Food is a superb culinary experience in the “The Chop House”. Glenn and I had dinner there. For entrees we shared the warm crab & shrimp dip. For the main course we each had a filet mignon and skipped desert. Dinner was delicious and the we had a great time enjoying the elegant service.

We also had lunch at the Lookout Patio on an extremely hot day, enjoying the scenery and the cool mountain breeze. The Baja Cod tortillas were delicious.

As for the hot springs that started it all, although not open at present because of covid 19 restrictions, they still going strong. People luxuriate in the warm water under the sky, spring, summer, fall, winter. While onlookers having fun, standing by the pool taking pictures. The pool is even more fun on a snowy winter day. It really is lots of fun to sit in the steaming water and have your head covered with snow.

Lake Louise

Like Banff, it will keep you spellbound. As soon as you round the corner you are astounded by the sight of the sparkling blue water embraced in a V- shape by the shimmering white glaciers rising to the skies. The first time I set eyes on the dramatic beauty, I stood spellbound with my jaw dropped. No picture can ever capture the beauty or prepare you for how you will feel when experiencing the site, yourself.

Glenn and I stayed for hours wandering around the lake, breathing in the beauty and the crisp fresh air. Just us we started walking back to the hotel, to our surprise, a butterfly landed on Glenn’s shoulder and remained there until just before we reached our hotel.

The sun began to drop behind Mount Victoria, painting the sky a shimmering deep red. Soon after, the deep red halo quietly dropped below the mountain, leaving a quiet stillness behind. The twilight turned to darkness and the sky filled with millions of sparkling starts. We enjoyed 3 lovely days in Lake Louise that time. We stayed at Chateau Lake Louise, played tennis, swam in the pool, stopping by different restaurants for every meal, just having a great time.

William C. Van Horn’s dream has continued with the Fairmount Chateau Lake Louise, another “Grand Dame” in the mountains. I wonder what he would say if he could see his creations now.

Dining in Lake Louise

Lake Louise restaurants will please the most sophisticated palettes. For up to date information, hotels, activities, dining and more, please go online. By the way, check out the Deer Lodge in Lake Louise. It is an historic lodge with lots of fun activities including a rooftop Jacuzzi.

Glenn and I pampered ourselves with a six nights- seven days anniversary vacation, we combined Banff and Lake Louise. We spent more money than planned, but the memories we made will be for life.

Another famous and stunning place to visit in the Canadian Rockies isJasper National Park. Don’t forget to experience the “Jasper Sky-Tram.” A tramway called the Whistler is the longest and highest guided tramway, it is 2,263 meter above see level.  It is 7 kilometers south of Jasper, off the Icefields Parkway on Whistlers Road. The tram is a seasonal operation, running from late March to the end of October. Check it out here..

Last but not least, I would like to mention another most popular mountain resort – Waterton Lakes National Park.

Waterton Lakes National Park is in southern Alberta, Canada, bordering Montana’s Glacier National Park. It’s known for its chain of lakes, including the large Upper and Middle Waterton lakes, flanked by the Rocky Mountains. This is where the prairie meets the mountains and here is one of the few places where the prairie is the same as when settlers first arrived. It is also a place where you can see bison grazing.

Waterton is also part of the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park. First proposed in 1931, it is the combination of Waterton National Park in Alberta and Glacier National Park in Montana. With their common geography, natural and indigenous history, this UNESCO world heritage sight is an enduring symbol of peace and cooperation between nations.

The above-mentioned mountain park resorts are the most spectacular and the most visited. If you decide to visit any or all the sights, you will cherish your memories for life.

I hope I tweaked your interest and you decide to see your own backyard, wherever it is. Time to plan for tomorrow is today.

I hope and pray, the long hours of hard work for doctors, nurses, medical workers, and scientist soon come to a successful end with a vaccine to cure Covid-19 and we can all freely enjoy our life.

Wishing you a wonderful summer
